Starburst announces $42m series B: We're Hiring!
Martin Traverso, David Phillips, Dain Sundstrom, and Eric Hwang created PrestoDB 2012 while at Facebook. It was initially created to solve for slow queries on a 300 PB Hive Data Warehouse.
Martin, David, Dain and Eric needed to build a SQL-based MPP engine that would be easy to use based on existing skills, easy to connect to any database, warehouse, or data lake, and easy to integrate with any BI tool. Presto was created to solve for speed and cost-efficiency of data access at a massive scale.
Today, PrestoDB is best for companies that operate at or near Facebook scale. It’s best for massive internet-scale companies where the core use case is to reduce resource consumption for large scale batch processing.
In 2018 Martin, Dain, and David left Facebook to pursue building the Presto Open Source Community full-time. They created PrestoSQL to extend the benefits of Presto to more companies. The Presto Software Foundation was created in January 2019.
While PrestoDB was built to make queries more efficient for companies like Facebook and Uber, PrestoSQL is built for big data exploration for a much broader audience. Retailers, Financial Services, Healthcare, Telecom, Consumer Brands, Government entities and beyond. Companies like GrubHub, Slack, Comcast, FINRA, Condé Nast, and Nordstrom all utilize PrestoSQL.
PrestoSQL brings the value of Presto to the masses who are in varying stages of cloud adoption, yet need faster access to all of their data.
