Starburst Accelerates Presto Adoption for Fast, Interactive Queries of Big Data
Enables Businesses to Gain More Value and Insight from Almost Any Data Source, via Expertise with Open Source Presto
Boston, December 13, 2017 — Starburst, the enterprise Presto company, today announced the public availability of the Starburst Distribution of Presto. The company will provide enterprise-grade support to the rapidly growing Presto user base, while remaining focused on accelerating the development of the Presto engine through continued contributions to the open source Presto project.
Starburst was founded by a team of veteran distributed database system developers and open source enthusiasts, and includes the largest number of Presto committers outside of Facebook, the original creators of the technology. Previously, the team led the Presto initiative at Teradata and will continue to support Teradata customers as a new independent company.
“The era of Big Data has seen an explosion in both the volume of data and the number of disparate platforms for storing that data,” said Justin Borgman, Co-founder at Starburst. “Presto provides organizations with an open platform to query anything, anywhere. At Starburst, we’re here to help you get the most out of Presto. Whether you’ve been using it in production for years or you are trying it for the first time, we can help you quickly gain more value and insight from your data with the best open source distributed SQL engine.”
Originally created at Facebook as a successor to the Apache Hive project, Presto is an SQL engine that provides fast, interactive query performance across a wide variety of data sources including HDFS, Amazon S3, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, Kafka, Teradata and many others. Today, the Presto user base has grown to include hundreds of companies of all shapes and sizes, from fast-growing internet companies to the Fortune 500.
“Teradata is committed to Presto as a key component of our QueryGrid product line, offering customers the fastest path to data in Hadoop and other data sources,” said Oliver Ratzesberger, Chief Product Officer at Teradata. “With the launch of Starburst as a dedicated Presto company, organizations can have confidence that this technology is even more ready for enterprise deployments.”
In partnership with Starburst, Teradata will continue to offer customers Presto support, services, and custom development. Starburst will also certify releases of Presto optimized for QueryGrid, providing Teradata users with the fastest path to query data wherever it may be.
Starburst gives analysts the freedom to work with diverse data sets wherever their location, without compromising on performance. Using the open source Presto SQL engine, the Starburst Distribution of Presto provides fast, interactive query performance across a wide variety of data sources including HDFS, Amazon S3, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, Kafka, and Teradata, among others. Founded by the largest team of Presto committers outside of Facebook, Starburst is the only company providing enterprise support for the Presto project.
